Hidden away in a quiet Bellingham neighborhood, Big Rock Garden Park is a true gem of the City of Bellingham Parks system. In this 2.5-acre garden there are over 30 sculptures created by a number of notable artists. A network of interconnecting pathways allows visitors to view the artwork from many different angles. Around each corner is another treasure.

The sculptures are all built to withstand the harsh conditions of the Pacific Northwest, including rain, wind, cold and heat. There are pieces made of steel, aluminum, bronze, granite, basalt, concrete and other media. Some of the art is brightly colored, while other pieces blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings. Look carefully, or you might miss a few.

Amidst the man-made artworks are native and decorative plantings, including trees, shrubs and flowers. Visit this park throughout the year to watch the seasonal blooms come and go. Wandering the paths can take you 15 minutes or several hours, depending on how much time you want to spend enjoying the art and nature. In one corner of the park, past visitors who have perhaps been inspired by the nearby sculptures have constructed simple cairns.

Each May, the Friends of Big Rock Garden Park organize a Mother's Day party with local artists and musicians in addition to temporary sculpture installations. Contact Friends of Big Rock Garden Park for more information: 360.778.7105.
