Though not a destination that justifies traveling vast distances, Bulson Creek Falls are quite impressive if you happen to be passing through Skagit County. The proximity to I-5 near the town of Mount Vernon makes the falls a favorite year-round stop for locals to “check-in” with nature.

The short 0.1-mile trail to the falls heads south from an empty dirt lot that looks to have been a residential construction zone. Thick brush can obscure the area, so shoot for the left of a large debris pile. Some of the regular visitors tend the trail throughout the year, but it is not officially maintained and can be very muddy during winter and spring. A pair of rubber boots can save the day if it has been raining.

Upstream, Bulson Creek flows through a small rural neighborhood before dropping 54 feet over a sandstone ledge into a wonderfully lush and secluded gorge. The area near the foot of the falls seems to lead miles further from civilization it actually does. Watch your step when the flow is high, as maneuvering around the creek for that perfect photograph can be a bit tricky.
