Camping near the Puget Sound has a certain convenience in that it can seem like you’re a lot farther from civilization than you actually are. Just 90 minutes north of Seattle, Camano Island State Park Campground provides a genuine getaway that’s still within sight of Mount Rainier. Enjoy the “island life” by hanging around your campsite and watching boats move through the Saratoga Passage, or burn up some calories on the surrounding Camano Island State Park Loop Trails.

The campground is made up of upper and lower loops that are located a few hundred feet above Lowell Point and the accessible south beach of Camano Island State Park. The lower loop is open year-round and has several sites with great views out to the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains. Keep in mind that the campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis. The upper loop is more primitive and quiet, but it still retains a sense of being close to the water. Also, its long pull-through sites are best suited for larger RVs (up to 40 feet).  Five well-kept cabins, an intimate amphitheater, and the spacious group campsite rest in a mature forest between the loops and have separate restroom facilities and showers.

Down on the south beach, one exclusive campsite exists for hearty adventurers passing through on the Cascadia Marine Trail.  The water trail goes from the southern inlets of the Puget Sound all the way to the Canadian border and is for human and wind-powered boats only.
