The Siouxon Creek Trail is one of the best year-round hikes in the Portland area.  During the rainy winter months this low-elevation getaway provides a splendid display of a temperate old-growth forest.  Extensive stands of Douglas fir tower over the giant stumps of western red cedar that used to dominate the forest.  During the intense heat of August and September, the creek provides a string of deep, crystal-clear swimming holes.  Backcountry campsites make the trail an ideal place to overnight.  The many falls along the trail are beautiful in any season, including the broad, 50-foot Chinook Falls and the 100-foot Wildcat Falls that plummets from a basalt cliff.

For a longer hike, make the 10.4 mile, 2,100-foot climb up to Horseshoe Ridge.  The 14.5 mile, 2,800-foot climb to Huffman or Siouxon Peak provides spectacular views of Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, Mount Adams, and Mount Rainier.

Scouted this site for backpacking with kids and first time backpackers. Excellent choice if kids can follow rules to stay away from faster moving water. some Campsites are close enough to hike back to car if needed. Roads up to trailhead were fine with Toyota Camry. A few waterfalls alongs the roads keep youngsters entertained. Frost heave is real on road 5701 so be ready to go slow after mile 1. Many Road signs have been stolen so look for forest road numbers painted at intersections.
Had a wonderful two day two night backpack into Siouxon Creek. Hot weather and cool, crystalline pools provided a perfect summer getaway. Secret is getting out though and there is lots of day hiking and mountain biking and dog traffic on the trail. We hiked in 4 miles to Chinook Falls, and on to Wildcat Falls the next day. The trail down to Wildcat falls is gnarly and could use a rope to ascend or descend the sketchy loose dirt slope. A few tree roots help you a bit, but I'm sure the trees don't appreciate it as much as we do. *There are no amenities at the trailhead (no trash service or toilet) so a Northwest Forest Pass is not necessary, which I confirmed with the Forest Service.* There is a fire ban in Clark County right now, but the Gifford Pinchot says fires are OK in designated rings only, and implore people to drown all campfires after use. A great trail getaway!
