The Spokane River is about 110 miles long and stretches from Lake Coeur d'Alene to Lake Roosevelt. The Upper Spokane Falls are located in downtown Spokane. They are the second largest urban falls in the country. There are many footbridges and walking paths located around the falls for various views and easy access. Interpretive signs giving a brief history of the area help people understand the importance of the falls. A major part of that history includes the Spokane Tribe, which calls the falls "Stluputqu" meaning "swift water." Historically, the falls have been an important salmon fishery for the tribe.
This patch of wilderness located in the city is a great place to stretch your legs. Much of the Riverfront Park was developed for the World’s Fair that was held in Spokane in 1974. Since then additions have been made, and today a major redevelopment is currently underway, with completion set for 2021. Once completed, it will be a must-see for anyone who visits the city.
