Stettner's Rocks

Stettner’s Rocks is a climbing area located on the west bluff of Devil’s Lake in Baraboo, Wisconsin. This is a great area for beginning climbers looking for a challenge, seasoned climbers looking for more laid-back routes than those found in other areas of Devil’s Lake, or climbers just looking to escape the sun and popularity of the east bluff climbing areas.

The grades on the Stettner’s Rocks routes range from 5.4 to 5.7 but can be tricky due to the slippery nature of this smooth quartzite rock. Friction is hard to come by in these parts! There are easy access points to set anchors for top-rope climbing. In addition, these routes can be great for the beginner trad climber.

Climbers should park in the boat ramp parking lot across from the boat launch on the south shore. Proceed to the West Bluff Trailhead and hike about 600 feet up West Bluff Trail. Just after the stone steps end, there will be a climbers trail turnoff to your right followed shortly by another climbers trail turnoff on the right. Take the second climbers trail. You will run right into Stettner’s Rocks in around 450 feet.

If you happen to have your dog with you, be sure to visit the boat ramp and pet swim area on your way out, located across from the boat ramp parking lot, for a quick cool down in the lake! Camping is available in and around Devil’s Lake, but campsites inside the park are often reserved well in advance. A favorite of climbers is the nearby Green Valley Campground. The owners of Green Valley Campground have been known to barter an overnight stay in exchange for goods or a couple hours of labor.
