Grand Teton National Park is a park of overlooks. Along the two main roads that traverse the park on the north/south axis, there are literally dozens of turnouts, overlooks, and wide spots in the road from which to view the ever-present Grand Tetons and the abundant wildlife. One overlook is a bit of a special secret, not appearing on any park maps, but well worth the bumpy drive and short walk to reach it.

The turnoff for the overlook is not marked, but there is a sign for the Lost Creek Ranch and the dirt road is just a few hundred yards south of the well-marked Snake River Overlook. Following the driving directions carefully, there is a gate and a wide spot to park along the road. The hike is very short to the cookout area (used by the Triangle X Ranch, so be respectful) and the marvelous overlook above Hedrick Pond. The best time to come up here is mid-morning, and at that time, not only will the Tetons be lit up, but the meadows and hills between the lookout and the mountains will be nicely lighted. Hedrick Pond is very close to the highway, as can easily be seen from up here, but it is not visible from the valley floor.
