I don't think a float would help much, in the slot canyon you're constantly in and out of the water, on the sections where you're not directly in the creek there tends to be quite a bit of vegetation and it can get hairy, everything is pokey. We were able to sneaky through the narrows section without getting to wet, there is a small shelf and if you hug the left side as you descend the narrows you can avoid the deep pools (at least that was my experience May 2018).
I just hiked this last week and can definitely say that It would be very doable with a hammock! The hardest section to find good trees would be the first stretch (boulder mail trail), It is still doable and I'm sure you'll be able to find a suitable pair of trees, After you hit the death hollow section there is plenty of prime real estate for hammocking!
