This 34.5-mile backpacking loop offers an immersive experience through the remote and dramatic landscapes of the Grand Staircase-Escalante region. Beginning and ending at the Little Death Hollow Trailhead, the route follows a mix of dirt roads and narrow canyons, showcasing stark desert beauty, colorful sandstone formations, and stretches of solitude. Expect slot canyon navigation, wide-open plateaus, and a few scramble-worthy sections. This route is best suited for experienced desert hikers prepared for variable trail conditions and limited water access.

Start at the Little Death Hollow Trailhead and head northeast along Wolverine Loop Road, a rugged jeep track that winds through high desert terrain framed by slickrock and low pinyon-juniper forest. After several miles, connect with Horse Canyon Road, where the scenery opens up into a broader canyon system with massive Navajo sandstone walls.

Continue south through Horse Canyon, a wide corridor with dramatic cliffs and occasional cottonwood groves offering some shade. Eventually, you'll meet the junction for Little Death Hollow—a narrow and twisting slot canyon that gradually transitions from wide and sandy to tight, serpentine passages. Be prepared for minor scrambling and boulder-hopping as you navigate this striking stretch.

Exit the slot and follow the trail back toward your original starting point, completing the loop. Navigation can be tricky in some areas, so a GPS device and map are strongly recommended.

Expect to see desert wildflowers in spring, cactus blooms, and resilient plant life like rabbitbrush and blackbrush. Wildlife sightings may include lizards, jackrabbits, and birds of prey circling the canyon rims.

Water & Camping
Water is extremely limited and seasonal—bring plenty or cache in advance. Some hikers opt to stash water near junctions or reliable spots (check recent trip reports or call the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center). Dispersed camping is allowed—look for established sites with durable surfaces, especially in Horse Canyon or near the start/end of Little Death Hollow.

Considerations

  • No permits are required for day trips. Check with Escalante Interagency Visitor Center

For updated information regarding overnight backcountry permits.

  • This route is remote and unshaded—bring sun protection, extra water, and be prepared for temperature changes.

  • Flash flood danger exists in the slot canyon sections. Always check the weather before entering.

  • Cell service is very limited. Bring a map, compass, and/or GPS for navigation.
