Parking for this loop hike is at the Risor Lake Trailhead.  To access the loop, cross Gunn Ranch Road. The access trail is well defined and has one long switchback before reaching the loop.  At the trail junction, continue straight to hike the loop clockwise.

At the one mile mark, the trail levels out and traverses the south side of Lewis Butte.  At about 1.75 miles, the trail reaches some old ruins of a barn and coral.  A little further and the trail reaches a dirt service road.  Turn right on the road and walk through a parking area to regain the trail.  At about 2.25 miles, the loop trail turn off and begins to climb Lewis Butte.  There is a small section of forest that is the only shade for the entire loop.

The trail reaches the top of Lewis Butte at about 2.8 miles.  From the summit, the trail descends the east side of the Butte with many switchbacks for 2 miles.  At 4.8 miles the loop ends at the access trail.  Turn left and return to the trailhead.
