This 42.4-mile loop begins and ends at White Pass, weaving together a section of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), the Packwood Lake Trail, Clear Lost Trail, and Sand Lake Trail. The route offers a mix of alpine ridges, forested valleys, and lake basins, making it a rewarding multi-day backpacking trip or an ambitious long-distance run.

From White Pass, head south on the PCT. Take the PCT to Upper Creek Trail and hike towards Packwood Lake. The loop then continues following the Packwood Lake Trail to the Clear Lost Trail, climbing into higher terrain where forests give way to meadows and views. Next, Continue onto the Sand Lake Trail. Here, alpine meadows and lake views open up before reconnecting with the PCT for the return to White Pass. The terrain ranges from smooth singletrack to more rugged and remote stretches, offering a balance of challenge and scenery.

Flora & Fauna

  • Old-growth forest with hemlock, fir, and cedar

  • Wildflower meadows in summer: paintbrush, lupine, avalanche lilies

  • Wildlife: black bears, deer, mountain goats, marmots, pikas, eagles, and osprey near lakes

Permits

  • Wilderness permits are required. These self-issuing permits are free and available at the trailheads.

  • Some trailheads accessing Goat Rocks Wilderness require a day fee or valid recreation pass. Check the U.S. Forest Service Recreation Pass and Permits page for details.

Camping

  • Packwood Lake: large established campsites along the shore

  • Sand Lake: dispersed sites with alpine views

  • Additional primitive sites along Clear Lost Trail

  • No water at higher ridges, so plan refills at lakes and streams

Best Season

  • July–September is the prime season for snow-free trails and wildflowers

  • Early season (June) may still hold snow at higher elevations

  • Fall (October) offers crisp air and solitude but colder nights

Need to Know

  • Carry a detailed map or GPS: trail junctions can be confusing

  • Water is plentiful at lakes and streams, but always filter or treat

  • Mosquitoes are heavy in early summer; bring repellent

  • Weather shifts quickly in the Cascades; pack layers for sun, rain, and cold

Suggested Backpacking Itinerary

  • Day 1: White Pass to Packwood Lake - Follow the PCT south, then turn onto Packwood Lake Trail.

  • Day 2: Packwood Lake to Sand Lake - Continue via Clear Lost Trail, climbing into higher terrain.

  • Day 3: Sand Lake to White Pass - Follow the Sand Lake Trail back to the PCT, then head north to White Pass.
