The New Chums Beach Trail is an adventurous hike located near Whangapoua. This trail travels along the shore of the Pacific Ocean, up a cliff, and along a pristine sand beach. This hike is 3.1 miles long and gains 164 feet of elevation.

This hike starts from a parking area at the end of Mangakahia Drive. There is a bathroom at the trailhead. Begin hiking north towards the ocean. After 0.1 miles, you will have to cross the Pungapunga River. Once you have crossed the river, you will be hiking along the shore of the ocean. This quickly becomes a rocky beach. You will have excellent views of the ocean and Pungapunga Island.

After about 0.3 miles, there will be a trail that appears in the trees to your left. Take this trail. 0.3 miles on this trail will bring you to a junction. Go right here. This trail will be very steep and sometimes rocky. 0.1 miles of steep trekking will bring you to the top of a sea cliff. From here, there are amazing views of New Chums Beach and Motukopu Island to the north. To the south, you will see Pungapunga Island.

Turn around and return to the junction. Head right here and continue through the trees. After 0.1 miles, you will reach New Chums Beach. Continue along the beach for 0.6 miles to reach the end of the trail. Take some time to enjoy this beautiful beach before retracting your steps to return to the trailhead.

The New Chums Beach Trail is open for hiking year round. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. It is best to do this hike close to low tide to avoid unnecessary bushwacking. The New Chums Beach Trail is a fantastic way to enjoy one of New Zealand’s most incredible beaches.
