Icicle Creek slows into mellow pools near Rock Island Campground, so while all the campgrounds on Icicle Road offer excellent water access, Rock Island seems more intimately connected with the creek. Beautiful views stretch out from the sites, and plenty of side trails lead down to ideal swimming holes. You'll also be close to the Jack Trout Trailhead and heaps of other trails leading into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Like neighboring Chatter Creek Campground, Rock Island Campground's distance from Leavenworth may mean slightly smaller crowds than at Eightmile or Bridge Creek.

Sites here are well shaded and spaced. The 20 single sites and two double sites are all first-come, first-served. All have fire rings and picnic tables, and potable water and vault toilets are centrally located. Sites are generally small, so this may not be the best fit for large RVs.

We couldn't leave early on Friday, so we showed up Saturday morning (10am) hoping some folks would be leaving. We were lucky to grab a site (#3) right on the river. At least one other site was opening up around the same time and was occupied very quickly. Checkout is at noon.

Our site was on the small side - it would have been tough to fit two tents, but most sites had a bit more space. The campground is well maintained. Although you can see other people, several sites face the river providing a nice view and a feeling a privacy. There's great access to day hikes in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness - we chose Colchuck Lake.
