As the name suggests, this loop summits three peaks (Valencia, Oats, and Alan Peaks) in Montana de Oro State Park. The loop is 15.1 miles, and follows a well-maintained singletrack for a challenging day hike or trail run. The loop begins and ends at Valencia Peak Trailhead, at the parking pull-off near Spooner’s Cove off Pecho Valley Road. The route first climbs the nearly 2 miles to Valencia Peak, and reaches Oats Peak near mile 4. From here, the trail stays along a prominent and attractive ridge on the way to Alan Peak in the near distance, passing through a verdant grove of oaks along the way. There are excellent views along this ridge, and on a hot day, the shade from these trees are a welcome relief on an otherwise exposed route. After reaching Alan Peak, the route returns nearly to Oats Peak before descending down to meet Coon Creek near mile 10.7. The trail parallels the creek until reaching Pecho Valley Road, where we take Bluff Trail to meet the Pacific coast. The scenic trail here follows the bluffs above the ocean and takes us back to our starting point at Valencia Peak Trailhead. There are a number of excellent spots along Bluff Trail for contemplative rest. There is no water along the way until reaching Coon Creek, and this route is certainly exposed, so be prepared for the elements! One of the best times of the year for hiking or running this loop is in the late winter and spring, when the rains have turn these hills green and full of life.
