This 36.6-mile backpacking route through the Los Padres National Forest offers a mix of rugged canyons, remote wilderness, and scenic ridgelines. Starting at Matilija Trailhead, the route traverses the Matilija Wilderness, traveling through Murietta Canyon to reach Blue Canyon Pass and Blue Canyon. The journey includes stretches along the Murietta Divide, sweeping views of the Santa Ynez Mountains, and a descent into Blue Canyon, following the Santa Ynez River before looping back through Murietta Canyon. This route is ideal for experienced backpackers seeking solitude and diverse terrain.

From Matilija Trailhead, follow the Matilija Divide Trail, weaving through sycamore and oak groves while crossing the creek multiple times. After a few miles, the trail climbs out of the canyon, gaining elevation as it heads toward Murietta Divide. From here, expect panoramic views of the surrounding peaks before descending toward Upper Santa Ynez Camp.

Continuing east, the trail undulates along ridgelines and meanders through rugged chaparral before reaching the intersection with the Blue Canyon Trail. The route then descends gradually into Blue Canyon, a shaded corridor lined with towering oaks and seasonal water sources, before reaching the Santa Ynez River. From there, the trail follows the river before looping back through Murietta Canyon to complete the route.
