The Desert Foothills Loop is a scenic 1.3 mile loop path along a paved path that cirlces the interior of the city park near the Alamogordo mountains.

Visitors can drive into the park and park in the gravel lot. Walking up the steps to the covered picnic area reveals wide views of the mountains and White Sands basin which will compliment much of the hike.

The mostly paved path winds amongst desert flora like cholla and yucca plants as the gradual slope circles around. From the high point of the trail, hikers can opt to branch off onto the network of single track paths that head further into the mountains. Several benches sit along the path allowing hikers to rest and take in the views, whether that is viewing the mountains or the large valley below, as well as the desert wildlife that frequents the park.

Desert Foothills Park and parking area are open from 6am to 10pm daily. Outside of the picnic pavilion, there is no shade along the hike.
