Beginning at the Cottonwood Day Use Area, the most visited section of Black River Recreation Area, the Huckleberry Trail is the easiest hiking trail in the recreation area.

Following a mostly flat, wide dirt path from the parking area toward a small diversion dam on the Black River, the Huckleberry Trail traces a day route along the trees before coming to an end at a small wetlands.

The fine sandy trail surface combined with the relatively few hikers who visit the area help make all kinds of wildlife tracks visible on this trail. Upon reaching the wetlands area, visitors might be lucky enough to catch sight of the Rio Grande Cooter turtle or blue sucker fish which make their home in the area.

An additional 1/10 mile walk from the parking area leads to a boardwalk area set over the water with a few interpretive signs.

A few tables and a vault toilet are in the parking area. This area doesn't have a lot, but does offer a nice spot to stretch your legs with an easy hike, as well as a wadable river during hot weather.

Limited to day use only.
