Agnew Lakes Loop is a 36.9 mile route through stunning high-alpine scenery starting and ending at Agnew Meadows, this route links some of the Eastern Sierra’s most iconic lakes—Minaret, Ediza, Garnet, Thousand Island—and lesser-known gems like Waugh and Gem Lakes. A challenging route with consistent elevation change and jaw-dropping scenery throughout.
From Agnew Meadows, head south on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) before turning north onto the John Muir Trail (JMT). Continue to the Minaret Creek Trail, which brings you to the striking shores of Minaret Lake surrounded by the jagged peaks of the Minaret mountains. From here, continue north passing the eastern shores of Cecil and Iceberg Lakes before reaching Ediza Lake.
Eventually you will rejoin the JMT and follow it north to Garnet Lake and Thousand Island Lake, some of the crown jewels of the Sierra. Continue to the PCT/JMT junction and follow it north to Waugh Lake. From Waugh, descend past Gem Lake and head toward Agnew Pass. From there, rejoin the PCT south and return to Agnew Meadows.
Flora and Fauna
You'll traverse several ecological zones, from pine and fir forests to windswept granite benches and meadows full of wildflowers. Marmots, pika, and alpine birds are common, and bear sightings are possible.
