The Appalachian Trail (AT) is a famous footpath that stretches 2,200 miles across 14 states, from Georgia to Maine. However, before even starting the AT, most hikers will have to add on an additional 8 miles to the start of the trail by hiking the Appalachian Approach Trail from Amicolola Falls State Park to Springer Mountain.

The approach trail begins from the Park Visitor Center. Just behind the building you’ll find the iconic arch. Be sure to snap your photo here, then continue and enjoy a few minutes of easy hiking.

The trail then nears the falls and begins climbing up a wooden staircase. Eventually you’ll come to the base of the beautiful waterfall. A bridge crosses the creek here with a fantastic view. Enjoy, as this is the highlight of the Approach Trail.

You’ll then continue climbing up more stairs until you are above the falls.

The trail then mellows out and heads back into the forest.

The Approach Trail stays nestled in the forest for the reminder of the way, with very limited views. You’ll gain elevation as you make your way toward Springer Mountain.

One last climb to the summit leads to a small opening in the forest with a great view. You’ll find two plaques here signifying the start of the Appalachian Trail. Be sure to sign the trail register hidden in the rock near the plaque.

If overnighting, there is a shelter and camping area just behind the summit.
