The Upper Truckee River Loop is a short, peaceful walk along single track trail straddling the edge of the river as well as the scenic meadows upstream from Lake Tahoe.

The trailhead begins at a parking lot that generally stays busy as the upper parking lot for those shuttling cars and paddling or floating down this stretch of the Upper Truckee. The loop is made by combining two distinct sections of trail - one being a wider track through trees and meadows. This stretch generally follows a direct course, and hikers will share this section of the path with mountain and gravel bikers. The other stretch is a more scenic section that weaves through trees, over logs, and touches along the edge of the Truckee River. Bikes aren't allowed on this section, though this portion of the hike also tends to be muddy in sections as it lies low enough to be affected by water flow levels.

The trail is mostly flat, though can be a bit technical in sections just due to stepping over downed trees and logs, bypassing muddy sections, and having to be careful for smaller branches hanging distinctly at face level. Numerous short spurs lead to the banks of the crystal clear river. There are even a couple sandy river beaches surrounded by green brush.

Overall, this is an easy trail and family friendly, though it might be muddy later into the season or following wet conditions. The area contains a good amount of hiking trails - which double as x country ski routes during snowy conditions.

Despite having a larger parking lot, it might fill up with paddlers and floaters leaving their vehicles here and shuttling back from their trip down the river.

There is no water or bathrooms available at the parking area or along the trail. Overnight parking is not permitted.
