Hidden Lake via Willow Creek Trail

Hidden Lake is a small seasonal lake near a dramatic viewpoint overlooking the Coachella Valley with a round trip distance of around 3.6 miles from the upper station of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. The biggest draw of this hike is that it offers a far less crowded alternative to the Desert View and Discovery loop trails for those looking for a moderately easy trail with scenic desert views.

Beginning from the upper tramway station, hikers will need to stop first at the ranger station and fill out two free permits - one for backcountry hiking within Mount San Jacinto State Park, and one for entering Hidden Divide Natural Preserve where Hidden Lake is located.

The hike then follows the Willow Creek Trail as it climbs amongst some dramatic hills. The peak of Mt San Jacinto is occasionally visible through the trees as well. Of the main hiking routes beginning at the tramway station, the Willow Creek trail may be the least busy, so enjoy the relative quietness this route offers. 

After entering the Hidden Divide Natural Preserve, and very lightly used use path veers from the trail and heads toward Hidden Lake. Having navigational aids on this hike will be extremely helpful as the route to Hidden Lake is very easy to miss, and there is no cel service in the area.

A couple signs describe the seasonal cycle of the lake, and proceeding a short distance past it on the well marked path will lead to a wide view across the Coachella Valley. 

On the return hike, consider joining the Round Valley Loop rather than retracing your route straight back to the trailhead.

Most visitors will access the Hidden Lake Trail by way of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Please be aware of the hours and fees for tram use. The Mountain Station tram stop has restaurants, bathrooms, water, small museum and other amenities. Visitors should also keep in mind the change in conditions from the Coachella Valley floor, with the mountain area often being around 30 degrees cooler in temperature than Palm Springs proper. Pets are not permitted on the tram. Some planning will be necessary.
