Amicalola Falls State Park is a world away from nearby Atlanta. Nestled deep within the north Georgia forest, the park is home to the namesake Amicalola Falls - a beautiful 729-foot waterfall, the third-highest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi. The park is also home to many hiking trails, picnic areas, camping, and even a massive lodge for those looking to lodge in comfort.
The waterfall is of course the main attraction here. To hike to the falls you can begin from the visitor center. Pass under a picturesque stone archway, then enjoy a mellow stroll through the forest. You’ll cross the park road then hike alongside the creek. There is a nice spot to stop and picnic in this area.
You’ll then hike past an upper parking area and small pond. The trail then begins climbing to the base of the falls, featuring a wooden staircase with metal grate steps.
At the base of the falls the trail crosses over the stream via footbridge that provides stunning views of the falls above.
From here you can return the way you came, or make it a loop by taking the West Ridge Trail. You can also continue up to the top of the falls (more stair climbing required) then take the East Ridge Trail back.
Whichever way you choose, it’s hard to go wrong.
Do be aware that an entrance fee is required for the State Park.
