Springer Mountain in Northern Georgia marks the start of the famous 2,200 mile Appalachian Trail. To get here you have two options. 1) Hike the 8 mile approach trail from Amicalola Falls State Park. 2) Hike one mile from the Springer Mountain Trailhead. The only disadvantage about the latter (aside from missing beautiful Amicalola Falls) is that the trailhead is more out of the way and requires a drive in on Forest Road 42.

Once you’ve found your way to the trailhead, it’s an easy mile walk south on the AT to reach the summit of Springer Mountain. The trail does gain a bit of elevation, and is a bit rocky in areas.

Just before the summit of Springer is a side trail to the left. This will lead to the Springer Mountain Shelter. There are also campsites here.

The summit of Springer features a good view and two plaques signifying the start of the Appalachian Trail. If you are starting a thru-hike be sure to sign the register hidden in the rock near the plaque.

After enjoying the view, return the way you came to the trailhead.
