Blood Mountain is a popular day hike that leads to the summit of the highest point along the Georgian Appalachian Trail at 4,458’. It is a strenuous hike that is steep and rocky in areas, but the view from the top is well worth the effort. You can also overnight it, staying in the stone shelter at the summit or camping nearby. Note that a bear canister requirement is in effect from March 1 to June 1.

You can begin this hike from Neel Gap. You’ll cross the road and soon enter the Blood Mountain Wilderness. The hike follows the Appalachian Trail and is fairly gentle at first as it slowly gains elevation.

Around a mile in the trail begins to really steepen, with some rocky areas too. This continues until you reach a flat, rocky opening near the summit. This is a fantastic viewpoint (even better than the actual summit) so be sure to enjoy.

Continue on just a bit further to reach the true summit where there is a stone shelter.

Return the way you came back to the trailhead, or, for a longer adventure, make a loop with the Freeman Trail.
