The Kaye Johnson Wildlife Trail is a 1.1 mile accessible paved walking path within Modoc National Wildlife Refuge.
Reached from a small parking area along the larger Wildlife Loop Auto Tour Route, the Kaye Johnson Trail follows a flat route that heads into the grasses surrounding a small pond. Most popular as an area for watching the variety of bird species that make their home in the refuge, rodents and amphibians can also be spotted along this walk. A small bird blind sits at the edge of the pond offering the quiet and patient visitor a chance to see some of the birds that make their home in the pond. There is also interpretive signage and a couple benches along the trail.
The loop has a short spur that reconnects with the Wildlife Loop, so anyone walking the larger loop can opt to follow this path and then reconnect with the larger path.
Lying a short distance from Teal Pond, this trail provides a distant spot to watch the bird life in the larger pond, so binoculars would definitely be worth packing for this one.
There are no bathrooms or water along the trail (those can be found at other areas of the refuge), and aside from the bird blind, there is no shade on this hike.
This trail is subject to the Wildlife Refuge rules, including 7am to dusk open hours.
