Grace Ridge is a spectacular hike near Homer, AK in the picturesque and unique Kachemak Bay State Park. Most hikes in Kachemak Bay require a water taxi or seaplane shuttle to get to the trailhead, and Grace Ridge requires this. It's about a 30-45 minute boat ride from Homer to the southern trailhead deep in Tutka Bay, where most hikers begin their hike. The trail then follows Grace Ridge northbound for 8 miles, climbing and then descending about 3,200 feet until reaching Kayak Beach, where a water taxi can be arranged for pickup. The trail can be hiked in either direction, but the southern end is steeper and thus most hikers prefer to ascend this way and enjoy the gradual descent to Kayak Beach. Water taxis must be arranged in advance; several charter companies operate out of Homer daily during the summer season, and they usually have updated trail reports and advice as well. Be sure to keep an eye out for otters and other wildlife on the boat ride!
The trail itself is excellently maintained, especially considering its remoteness, with a smooth dirt surface for most of the alpine portion. The forested portions of the trail at lower elevations can become overgrown with cow parsnip in mid-summer, but the trail is mostly wide enough that this is not a significant issue. The trail is also lined with salmonberries in many parts, which ripen throughout July. Above treeline, look for lupines in June and July, and fireweed later in the summer. And be sure to keep an eye out for bears - Kachemak Bay is home to thousands of bears. Carrying bear spray and practicing leave no trace and bear safety procedures is imperative.
There are several camping options nearby the Grace Ridge trail. Backcountry campsites can be sought out along the flatter sections of the trail both above and below treeline, and there are privately owned yurt camping options nearby both ends of the trail.
Overall, Grace Ridge offers amazing views in all directions on a very well-maintained trail and a unique feel. Although reaching the trailhead (and getting home) requires some logistical forethought, it's well worthwhile it to experience this gem of a hike in a gorgeous and unique part of Alaska.
