The Red Hill Trail is located near Elk Lake, just off the Cascade Lakes Highway. The trail takes hikers off the beaten path and near several scenic small lakes (Horse Lake, Sunset Lake and Sisters Mirror Lake … to name a few). It can be hiked as a standalone trail, but can also combined with the PCT to form a loop.

The trail begins at a junction with the PCT, about a 4 mile hike west of Elk Lake. Thru-hikers on the PCT will often choose to take the Red Lake Trail as an alternate route as it saves a couple miles.

From here the trail descends slightly down toward Sunset and Horse Lake. Although not directly on trail, these lakes are just a quick side trip away.

The trail then gradually climbs, passing the namesake Red Hill - just to the west of trail. You’ll then level out and pass some small ponds before coming to the end of the Red Hill Trail and rejoining the PCT. Sisters Mirror Lake, a beautiful small lake, is located near this junction and is a great ending destination.

From here you can return the way you came or, as mentioned above, use the PCT to create a loop. Note that a wilderness permit is required if you are planning on camping overnight.
