Silver Lake is a beautiful spot in Amador County just a 35-minute drive from South Lake Tahoe. Amador County was created in 1854 and was one of the most popular gold mining sites in California. The lake sits alongside Old Emigrant Road, originally built in 1848.
At 7,200 feet of elevation, Silver Lake West Campground is one of two campgrounds across the road from one another. All sites at Silver Lake West Campground are first-come, first-served. With 42 RV or car sites as well as picnic tables, fire rings, and boat rentals, this campground is a less busy, though no less beautiful, alternative to Lake Tahoe sites.
Most sites have a good amount of room surrounding them. Some are nestled under the pines, while others are up on the rocks, providing fantastic views of the mountains.
The campground has close access to fishing, boating, and hiking, including the nearby Woods Lake Loop. Silver Lake West Campground is a good choice for those looking for an alpine adventure without the Lake Tahoe crowds.
