Tourists visit Balanced Rocks to see a geological phenomenon that occurred thousands of years ago when a rock boulder fell from a cliff. Balanced Rocks are geological formations characterized by large boulders resting on other rocks, or balancing on them.

This boulder has been protected from erosion by the way it has been compressed into the soft dirt. Over time, the loose dirt and sand are carried away, revealing a pedestal under the boulder, which appears to be balanced.
