This is a 22-mile route that travels from Cuesta Pass to Cerro Alto Campground and back to Cuesta Pass. It is a great opportunity to have an accessible backpacking experience, with an approachable 11-mile hike to a campground, and an 11-mile hike back to the pass. The route takes West Cuesta Ridge Road, also known as TV Tower Road, from the turnoff at Highway 101. This is a popular area for hikers, mountain bikers and off-road vehicles, and can be highly trafficked at certain times, especially on weekends. Around mile 7.5, there is a gate past which only hikers and bikers are allowed, making for a much more pleasant experience. Before this, the route is along a wide dirt road that is steep at times, full of potholes and ruts at other times. After the gate, the route narrows and becomes more of a path. There are a few options for short side trips along this route, including Tassajara Peak and Cerro Alto. Be on the lookout for poison oak, especially in the springtime, and especially on the descent into Cerro Alto Campground.
