This 51.5-mile out-and-back route from Bowery Trailhead to Walker Lake offers a stunning journey through the heart of Idaho’s White Cloud Mountains. With alpine lakes, rugged peaks, wildflower-filled basins, and multiple trail intersections, this route serves as both a rewarding destination and a flexible blueprint for building your own backcountry adventure.

Starting from Bowery Trailhead take the Bowery Trail. Continue north on the Chamberlin Creek Trail and then veer northeast on Livingston Mill-Castle Divide Trail.

As you progress, the trail intersects with several other routes that lead into nearby basins, such as Chamberlain Basin, Baker Lake, Spring Basin, and Boulder Lakes. You’ll traverse over passes, and along ridgelines, giving you plenty of options for side trips or alternate routes. The landscape becomes more dramatic as you enter high-country terrain dotted with alpine lakes and framed by the White Clouds’ signature pale peaks.

Continue along the Livingston Mill-Castle Divide Trail until you reach Boulder Lakes Trail. Turn left and head west. At the next intersection turn right to follow the Walker Lake Trail. Eventually, you’ll reach Walker Lake, a pristine alpine lake nestled in a quiet basin surrounded by granite walls. It's a rewarding turnaround point for the main route and also a perfect base camp if you want to explore the nearby high country or scramble to unnamed peaks.

Retrace your steps to return to Bowery Trailhead.
