Bob Henderson Loop

The Bob Henderson Loop is a brisk hike along a closed roadbed within the Puente Hills Preserve. 

The hike traces two loops - the smaller of which is actually named the Deer Loop Trail, though can only be accessed via the longer Bob Henderson Loop - as they descend and climb gradual hills lying on either side of Arroyo Pescadero within the sprawling natural habitat preserve that spreads across hills from Whittier to Diamond Bar. This hike, which shares a trailhead with the Arroyo San Miguel Trail, begins at a gated trailhead, passes a small covered lookout area, and then heads into the rolling hills. 

Despite being just outside the heart of Whittier, it's easy to imagine walking amidst an undisturbed landscape within the folds of the greater Los Angeles area, as arid scrub and eucalyptus trees line the hills.

The trail alternates between cracking asphalt and dirt, and hikers should be aware that much of the trail length is unshaded. The Deer Loop Trail has a length of .7 miles, and can easily be trimmed off if desiring a shorter distance.

We opted to hike the trail in a clockwise direction, which saves a lookout point and interpretive sign describing Bob Henderson's contirbutions to the City of Whittier to the end of the hike, though it can be walked in either direction.

The trailhead has an outhouse and drinking fountain, though the limited number of parking spots may fill up on weekends. The parking area and trails are open from sunrise to sunset. Leashed dogs are permitted on the Bob Henderson Loop, however bicycles are not.
