Relay Peak is a 10,338’ summit on the north side of Lake Tahoe. The peak is the highest point on the entire Tahoe Rim Trail, and makes for a wonderful day hike. From the summit you’ll have 360 degree views down into Nevada, California and, of course, Lake Tahoe.
There are a handful of different ways to approach the Relay Peak Summit, with options for loops and overnight trips. In this guide we’ll take a look at Relay Peak via the Tahoe Rim Trail starting from the Mount Rose Summit Trailhead.
The Mount Rose Summit Trailhead is a popular hiking destination. The trail will likely be crowded for the first couple miles to Galena Falls, a lovely small waterfall. After this the crowds begin to dissipate as the trail gains elevation.
Continue climbing until reaching a saddle and junction to Mount Houghton. Turn left and continue as the trail stays on the far side of the ridge, with amazing views.
Soon you’ll reach the summit of Relay Peak. After enjoying the spectacular 360 degree views, return the way you came (unless you have plans for a different route on the return trip). And if you have the energy, consider tagging Mount Houghton or Mount Rose while in the area.
