This alternate route from Windigo Pass to Shelter Cove (Odell Lake) is popular with PCT thru-hikers. Not only does it save roughly 8 miles and 2,000’ of gain, it also stays much lower in elevation to avoid the deep snow that often lingers well into summer on the East and North slopes of Diamond Peak.
The alternate begins at Windigo Pass. Follow the forest road east for a short distance, then hop on the Oldenberg Lake Trail. This trail gradually descends, past Oldenberg and Bingham Lakes until reaching Crescent Lake.
You can then follow the Metolius-Windigo Trail as it parallels above Cresent Lake Road. You’ll have a wet feet crossing of Summit Creek before arriving at Whitefish Horse Camp.
The horse camp offers drinking water and vault toilets.
Next you’ll turn onto the Whitefish Creek Trail and follow it as it gradually ascends through a small burn area and parallels the namesake creek.
The trail tops out at beautiful Diamond View Lake. This lake offers a stunning view of Diamond Peak in the distance, as well as some good camping.
From here it’s all downhill as the trail follows near Trapper Creek. You’ll eventually exit the wilderness, cross the railroad tracks, and arrive at Shelter Cove on beautiful Odell Lake.
