The Nugget Point Lighthouse Walk is a short hike located near Kaka Point, Otago. This trail travels along sea cliffs to Tokata Lighthouse which provides views of ‘the nuggets’. This out and back hike is 1.1 miles and gains 308 feet of elevation.

This hike starts from Nugget Point Parking Area off of The Nuggets Rd. There are vault toilets located at the trailhead. Begin hiking east on a gravel trail. After 0.1 miles, you will come to a viewing platform atop a cliff. You will have great views of the rocky ocean shore.

Continue hiking on the gravel trail. You will be traveling by some windswept trees. The trail is also quite exposed and close to the cliff's edge. You may be able to see seals on the rocky coast as you walk along. After another 0.2 miles of hiking, you will have your first view of Nugget Point and Tokata Lighthouse.

Continue hiking onto the point and enjoy views of Molyneaux Bay to the north and the South Pacific Ocean to the south. 0.3 miles of mostly downhill hiking along the point will bring you to a Tokata Lighthouse. This lighthouse was built in 1869-70 and is 9.5 meters high. There is also a viewing platform here. You will be able to see ‘the nuggets’ which are wave eroded rocks that have taken the shape of gold nuggets. Once you have taken ample time to enjoy the stunning views, turn around and retrace your steps to return to the parking area.

The Nugget Point Lighthouse Walk is open for hiking year round. There are no associated fees to hike here. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. The Nugget Point Lighthouse Walk is a great hike for those looking for an easy way to enjoy coastal scenery in southern Otago.
