South Fork Trail to Broken Hill Overlook is nestled on the rugged San Diego coastline within Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. This region is home to 300 species of endangered native plants, including the Torrey Pine, which is one of the rarest trees in the world. Due to the delicate nature of the ecosystem and the eroding sandstone cliffs, it is exceptionally important to stay on the trail here.
Begin on Torrey Pines Park Road just south of the visitor center. This section of the trail is paved and is accessible. In around half a mile, turn right and continue to follow South Fork Trail through dense chaparral. Soon views of the green fields of Torrey Pines Golf Course and the Pacific Ocean begin to open up. Be sure to keep an eye out for wildflowers blooming along the way as well as wildlife such as jackrabbits and many species of lizards and birds. Broken Hill Overlook provides panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding cliffs. It’s a great vantage point from which to watch seals, dolphins, and the annual gray whale migration.
