Sand Island State Recreation Area Campground is a perfect destination for those looking to escape the bustle of the city while still being close to Honolulu. Get ready for some camping just off the coast of downtown, with fantastic views of the skyline and the Pacific Ocean, illuminated by the glow of city lights at night. This unique perspective campground has plenty of open space and access to a sandy beach, yet is located among the industrial shipping wharves and warehouses. Here, the atmosphere is quite different than some of Oahu's other campgrounds, but Sand Island still offers a surprisingly disconnected escape from the busy city.

Camping is only available from Friday to Sunday from 7:45 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. with a valid state-issued permit. Facilities include plenty of free parking, public restrooms and outdoor showers, baseball fields, beach access, and 35 campsites in three camping areas. Be aware that there is little privacy between camping areas, and some sites have no shade. Camping areas B and C are further from the park entrance, though B is closer to the swimming area and shoreline. For security reasons, the park gate closes nightly and does not re-open until the following morning. Rates start at $12 per night for up to six residents, with $2 for each additional resident. For non-residents rates are $18 per night for up to six people and $3 for each additional person.
