Boise River: Discovery Park to Diversion Dam

One thing that makes this section of the Boise River so remarkable is how remote you feel just minutes from downtown Boise. Leaving from Discovery Park, this out-and-back paddle provides a wide-open view of the Black Cliffs, soaring birds of prey, and waterborne views of the Boise River Diversion Dam at the turnaround. The Boise River Diversion Dam was built in 1909 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Enter the river from the west side of Discovery Park. The park provides a shaded staging area and a 2.5-foot "step" down to the water for an efficient launch. Travel downstream for 1.5 miles to the Boise River Diversion Dam turnaround.

Winds can pick up in the canyon, creating unpleasant conditions, particularly for stand-up paddleboarders. If there is wind in town, it's wise to delay your trip until a calmer day.
