Ivan Oakes campground offers a shady respite from a day spent out on the lake. Nestled in the trees on the north shore of Lookout Point Reservoir, this diamond in the rough is well worth the trip. Canoes and kayaks can access the reservoir directly from the campground, while those with larger watercraft will have to drive 1.3 miles to the boat ramp at Signal Point. In addition to lake activities, Ivan Oakes is a perfect base for sampling some of the less traveled National Forest trails in the area. The North Shore Trail runs through the campground and is a great hike or mountain bike ride. A few miles east there is access to a number of spectacular higher elevation trails. Although somewhat popular with boaters in the summer, the campground is deserted once the reservoir is drawn down in the fall. While the sites are large and flat with fire rings and picnic tables, the rest of the amenities are spare, with vault toilets and no potable water. The campground is usually open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, and you can verify these dates by calling 541.942.5631.
