The Sittee River Swimming Hole is a wide, usually slow-moving section of the Sittee River just beneath the Southern Highway bridge that spans the river. Located about 3 miles north of the town of Maya Centre on Belize's Southern Highway, the swimming area is easy to find and can be accessed two ways. Parking along the shoulder on the southwest side of the bridge gives access to a footpath leading about 250 feet down to the water's edge. Alternatively, a dirt double-track on the northeast side of the bridge wraps around and leads to a dirt parking area immediately beneath the bridge beside the water.
The Sittee River is warm here and makes a refreshing spot to jump in on a hot day. There is a slight current, but during the dry season it is not too fast. The water is deep enough to swim in, but not deep enough to jump into in any place. There are no amenities of any kind along the river. You may find snack vendors just south of the off-shoulder parking serving up fruits and bags of plantain chips.
