The Laguna Trail is a short, accessible hike to Santa Maria Beach in Point Reyes National Seashore, as well as the shortest access route to Coast Camp. It is a nice hike through the rolling hills just south of Limantour Road, and it is representative of the transition from the central region of the seashore to the wilder areas to the north. The trail is in good condition and popular. Due to its shorter length, it is a great hike for families with kids that offers fun beach play at the end with views that are a joy for everyone. The trailhead is very near Point Reyes Hostel, making the Laguna Trail a nice day hike for lodgers there.
Plant and animal life are typical of Point Reyes, with coveys of ornate California quail common and offshore whale sightings possible from some of the higher vantage points.
Point Reyes is pleasant to visit all year. Many of the hikes, like the Laguna Trail, are exposed, making overcast days some of the nicest for hiking in the seashore. Winter storms, though liable to soak you, provide some of the most spectacular scenery over the Pacific Ocean.
