The beautiful rolling forests of Pike National Forest north of Pikes Peak and northwest of Colorado Springs is not an area of dramatic 14ers or rocky crests, but it is a great place for family camping with a remote feel or a base camp for exploring the Pikes Peak area and visiting Colorado Springs. There are several campgrounds in the area north of Woodland Park, and South Meadows Campground is the closest at just 5 miles away.
This is a typical national forest campground in most respects, but it does stand out as having very large sites with a lot of spacing between them. There are several roads that form small loops, but the overwhelming feeling to this campground is that there is lots of room to spread out. This is a great place for kids to ride bikes and explore the nearby meadows. The roads are narrow, and there are many places which inexplicably have short concrete posts lining the roads, making it challenging to back trailers into some sites, but there are plenty of large pull-throughs and other sites that are easy to access. There are a lot of double sites for larger families and groups (at double the fees). The campground sits in a cell phone hole with no coverage, but there is reception about 2 miles away down toward town.
