The popular Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area on the west side of Las Vegas is the site of one of the only campgrounds in the vicinity. Set about 2 miles from the visitor center and the start of the Scenic Loop Drive, this campground has a very isolated feel, even though the western edge of Las Vegas is a 10-minute drive away.
The campground is spartan, with no amenities other than vault toilets and drinking water. The main section is for tents or RVs and is a large loop with two inner roads. The best sites are along the outer perimeter, and about half the sites have shade structures for the picnic tables. There is a separate small loop of five sites for RVs of all sizes (no hookups), a walk-in tent camping area, and five group camping areas as well. The campground is far more popular for tent camping than RVs, and typically many of the campers are also climbers who are gone much of the day, so it is a very quiet campground.
Note: Red Rock Canyon is a destination for rock climbers from around the world and, being so close to Las Vegas, it is also a popular camping destination for local families. Reservations are not available (except for the three handicap sites and the group sites), so competition for these sites is fierce. Arriving very early (by 8 a.m.) is advised. The campground is closed from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
