The South Sister is a spectacular introduction to non-technical mountaineering in the Pacific Northwest. The trail up ascends through a dense hemlock forest before emerging into mixed alpine terrain and red cinder scree fields. Throughout the course of the route you'll catch breathtaking views of Mount Bachelor, Broken Top and the Cascade Range. The trail skirts the edge of the crater rim and curves around Teardrop Lake, the highest lake in Oregon, eventually arriving at the summit. From here you'll see the neighboring Middle and North Sisters, and on a clear day you'll have no trouble seeing Three Fingered Jack, Mount Jefferson, Mount Hood and Black Butte.

For climbers eager to get an early morning start, the Devils Lake trailhead offers nine campsites at no additional charge on a first-come, first-served basis. You can also soothe your feet in the chilly lake water after a long day of hiking. No matter what time of year you go, always remember to bring sunscreen and the essential mountaineering gear.

What an awesome hike! There was still some snow on the trail, but not too bad. And lots of people!

Summited this beauty for the first time on 8/24/17. Started at the Devils Lake trailhead the night before around 9 p.m. & camped out above Moraine Lake, then started the climb up the following morning at 6 a.m. Only ran into about 5 people the entire climb and there were only 2 people at the summit! It was one of the best hikes ever! Trails were in good condition, only ran into a few areas where we had to scramble and make our own path up near the first false summit, coming down was not a problem, just dig your heels in and let the scree take you down! Lots of glacier melt at the summit crater, so can refill there! Definitely a leg burner, but if you've done some of the extreme hikes in the Columbia River Gorge area, like Mt. Defiance, Ruckle Ridge, you'll be prepared for this one!

Summited Saturday from Devil's Lake; campsites go quickly here and there were many people camped in non-designated sites when we started at 5:15am. Trail conditions were great and there was only one small snowfield to cross until you reached the summit. Smoke from several fires partially obscured views to the south and southwest but the views of Middle and North Sister, as well as Broken Top, were gorgeous! It seems to be thunder storm season as a few rolled through the day before and were forecasted for late afternoon in the area as well, so keep a close eye on the weather and pack some waterproof gear. And lastly, BRING TREKKING POLES. Can you do it without them? Yes. Will you be happier if you have them? Absolutely.
