The Waiomu Kauri Grove Walk is an easy hike located in Coromandel Forest Park. This trail travels through dense forest along a stream before reaching a grove of kauri trees. This out and back hike is 3.4 miles long and gains 583 feet of elevation.

This hike starts from a small parking area on Waiomu Valley Rd. Begin hiking east on the gravel road. You will be hiking parallel to Waiomu Stream. After 0.3 miles, you will come to a junction and go left onto a dirt trail. Just 0.1 miles later, you will come to a stream crossing. It may be necessary to remove your shoes here.

After crossing the stream, continue on the trail. The trail will be mostly uphill but at a gradual grade. After 0.5 miles, you will cross a bridge over Waiomu Stream and continue trekking uphill. There will be another bridge crossing 0.3 miles down the trail. Enjoy views of the Coromandel forest before crossing another bridge 0.2 miles later. You will cross over the stream again in 0.1 miles. Then another 0.1 miles will bring you to the final bridge. There is a set of stairs here that bring you to a grove of large kauri trees.

Kauri trees can grow over 50m tall and may live over 2,000 years. The Maori used timber from these trees to build boats and houses. After you have taken in the beauty of these mighty trees, turn around and retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.

The Waiomu Kauri Grove Walk is open for hiking year round. There are no associated fees to hike here. Dogs are allowed on this trail but they must be on a leash. The Waiomu Kauri Grove Walk is an easy way to see a group of very impressive trees.
