This hike, from Muir Trail Ranch to Muir Pass leads through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Sierra. To set out on this multi-day adventure you’ll need to acquire the necessary permit, and also get yourself to the starting point of Muir Trail Ranch, which requires a hike in.

From Muir Trail Ranch follow the Florence Lake Trail until it joins the PCT/JMT a short distance later. You’ll then stay on the PCT/JMT for the remainder of this hike.

The trail follows the South Fork San Joaquin River for miles, offering great views and not too much elevation gain. Eventually you’ll cross the river and begin climbing substantially into Evolution Valley.

The JMT/PCT follows Evolution Creek (and does require one wet feet crossing). You’ll soon come to McClure Meadow which offers a stunning view. There is also a small ranger station cabin just off the trail here.

Continue along the JMT. One more big climb leads to Evolution Basin. This is the best stretch of this hike, and arguably one of the best sections of the entire JMT/PCT. You’ll walk past Evolution Lake, Sapphire Lake, Huxley Lake and Wanda Lake.

One last moderate climb leads to the top of Muir Pass. A unique stone hut rests atop the pass, and was erected in 1930 to commemorate John Muir.

After enjoying the pass and hut, return the way you came (unless you have other plans to continue).
