The Greenwood Creek Picnic Area is located a short drive east of the village of Harrisville. This inviting park is off the beaten path and therefore often overlooked. Those who find it will be rewarded with several picnic tables, fire pits, a gorgeous waterfall, and an idyllic open woodland. While camping in the picnic area is prohibited, there are a handful of nice sites directly adjacent to it.

The picnic area is located on the northern end of the greater Greenwood Creek State Forest, a 1,022-acre parcel that was originally preserved for future timber harvesting and watershed protection. The forest is a mix of hardwoods and pine, with groves of red pine in the picnic area.

Greenwood Creek parallels the edge of the picnic area, flowing over several falls, the largest of which is visible from several picnic tables. This falls will be most impressive in the spring when rain and snowmelt combine. The largest drop is approximately 10 feet tall.

A short ways downstream the creek pours into a slow-moving pool that gives way to a marshy wetland in the distance. Several smaller waterfalls and cascades can be found upstream. Many of them have small pools at their base that are perfect for wading or lounging on a hot day.

A 1.8-mile nature trail parallels the stream before turning sharply to follow a ridge to the southeast. The trail continues weaving through the forest, eventually crossing the access road a few times and returning to the picnic area. Wetlands, blueberries, raspberries, and groves of pine can all be found at various points along the trail.

Greenwood Creek Picnic Area is a great place to spend an afternoon enjoying the falls, the picnic tables, and the quiet forest.
