Nook Bar is a small gravel/sand bar located on the North Bank of the Chetco River. The bar itself is decently wide and long enough to separate yourself from other bar-goers on less crowded days. It is easy to walk right into the water from the bar as there are no hard drop-offs or rocks to worry about slipping on. While some areas are more gravel-laden than others, there are sandy spots, especially up by the trees. The water itself is a surreal turquoise green color that is sometimes exaggerated by warm summer algae. There are no rocks to jump off of here, as the terrain is generally flat along the river.
It is common for people to camp here overnight or bring an RV down to the riverside. Fishermen are common as the wide bar provides ample room for casting without worrying about hooks getting caught in vegetation. Camping is free, as is the day use.
This is a great spot when passing by/staying in Brookings. The drive up the river is extremely scenic and offers many pulloffs along the way. If you are finding the coast to be crowded, the Chetco will often see less traffic. If Nook Bar is too crowded, check out nearby Elephant Rock.
